Electives in Singapore
Whether you are a Singaporean returning home for electives and peripherals, or an overseas applicant looking to experience the local flavour of healthcare, Singapore's hospitals provide a wide range of clinical and surgical disciplines in which they accept medical students who are already in their clinical years for short-term training attachments.
Application is typically made through the National University of Singapore's Special Clinical Electives Programme portal, and have to be registered at least 6 months in advance to be considered. A comprehensive list of available postings and the hospitals offering them can be found on their website. Applicants to the SingHealth cluster may find out more information here, and applicants to Tan Tock Seng Hospital may find out more information here.
UK-based medical students with a valid MDU membership number receive free access to The Electives Network, which provides useful profiles on Singapore and its hospitals that students have previously been attached to.
Pre-employment grant
The Pre-Employment Grant (PEG) was launched by MOH Holdings (MOHH) in 2010 as a financial incentive to attract Singaporean medical and dental students from recognised UK universities to return home for work after graduation. The PEG is only awarded to Singaporean students in their penultimate and final clinical years (or from the 3rd last year, for those enrolled in 6-year courses), based on merit, to defray part of their remaining tuition fees. In return, recipients serve a two to four year bond in the hospital clusters upon graduation.
Students in a 5-year programme who are commencing their 4th/5th year, and those in a 6-year programme who are commencing their 4th/5th/6th year of studies this July/August/September are eligible to apply.
Applications are to be filed online via the PEG website.
Should you have any questions about the PEG, please email pre.employment.grant@mohh.com.sg.
Residency Programme
Singapore incorporated the Residency programme in 2010 as part of its evolving postgraduate medical education and training system. Residency is open to medical graduands and graduates from the UK provided they already have employment offers from MOH Holdings (MOHH). The Residency programme allows doctors to pursue their postgraduate training through one of three pathways – as surgical specialists, medical specialists, or clinician scientists.
Presently, three Sponsoring Institutions (SI) offer the Residency programme in Singapore – SingHealth (SingHealth), National University Health System (NUHS) and National Healthcare Group (NHG). More information on applying for the Residency programme can be found here, or you can direct further queries to MOHH here.
