Singapore medical society of the united kingdom
About Us
Who We Are
We are a student-led, non-profit organisation founded in 1994 that represents the interests of Singaporean and Singapore-educated students studying Medicine and Dentistry in the UK. We also provide resources for potential students.
With over 1100 lifetime members and growing, we give members opportunities to network and foster intercollegiate and inter-city friendships, and to further their academic and career development, through a series of ongoing events.
SMSUK also reaches out to:
Prospective students, to provide the necessary information to facilitate applications
International students looking to pursue a career in Singapore
Junior and senior practitioners in the UK.
SMSUK membership extends beyond graduation - our Alumni Wing actively engages our alumni through events and mentorship initiatives with current members.
Our History
The Singapore Medical Society of London (SMSL) was established in 1994 by a group of Singaporean medical students studying in London, based at the 5 medical schools of the University of London (UoL).
As the society grew to include those across the United Kingdom (UK), it adopted its current name in 2010 to formally acknowledge this broadening and diverse membership base.
Membership is now also accorded to dental students, whose interests have been represented by an elected Dental Officer since 2012.
The society has had a long record of co-operation with the various healthcare clusters in Singapore, helping them to organise their recruitment drives since 2000 and facilitating the dissemination of information from Singaporean employers and organisations to all members from pre-enrolment to graduands.
Events for members have varied over the years with many exciting events being added such as our weekend and day trips, although two society highlights survive into the present day – the Freshers, Members and Alumni Gathering, and the Annual Dinner.
Awards and Achievements
SMSUK is proud to have won the Partners-In-Education Award at the SingHealth Excels (RiSE) Awards each year since 2016.
We are deeply thankful for having the privilege to work so closely with Singapore's healthcare clusters.
Evolution of SMSUK Logo
The SMSUK logo has been changed 3 times since its inception in 1994.
In 2010, it changed to a more generic logo to reflect the changing demographic of the SMSUK members, as more students from the UK outside London joined. In 2012, as more dental students gained membership, the logo was redesigned to include the stethoscope ear pieces (in red), which were also meant to look like the crown of a tooth.
Most recently, in 2016, the logo was once again renewed as 22nd committee members decided a more contemporary, sleek look would be more suitable for the growing society. A predominance of the colour red was decided upon, both to reflect our national heritage as well as the profession that unites us. Upon closer examination, one can see that the central logo is made out of an ECG and the crown of a tooth, to reflect both the dental and medical students. As our society continues to grow, we hope that the bonds we form will be as strong as blood ties.
